| A Smarter Grid? |

Well I was hoping that at least a year would go by before I would have something negative to say about the new President in the White House. Part of the MOAB packages includes a plan towards a “smarter energy grid”, which translates to only a max of 4% of the United States energy consumption. IMHO four percent equals pointless unless you also have the funding, plans, and ideas for the other 96%.
First off, a federal plan to reduce the need for foreign oil imports is nothing new. Jimmy Carter had a long winded speech about the very same thing that Obama pushed in Indiana, in his version of "Crisis of Confidence” speech. I wonder when Obama is going to replace the solar panels on the White House that Regan removed?
The main problem that I have with a 'smarter energy grid' is just one word, that being the word 'grid'. Ontario Hydro seems to have something similar in place to what I think Obama is thinking. That individual property owners can produce electrical energy on site, and use it, and if they produce an excess of what they use, they can automatically sell it back to the hydro company. Sounds good as far as economics terms go, but it creates a privacy hole in your OPSEC systems. government inspectors would have the right to do random checks without warning, and trespass via 'right of egress' to find cheats and problems. No thanks, not worth the money.
Being independent, and self-reliant is a lifestyle choice, and I do not understand the mentality that places the responsibility of the producer of energy separate from the user. We should always reap what we sow. Imagine a world where we reap what other sow, ummmm, never mind, we're there now.
